When Do You Need to Convert HEIC to JPG?
The most common iPhone photo conversion: HEIC is the default format on iOS, but most Windows software, web platforms, and older tools don't support it. Converting to JPEG gives immediate compatibility everywhere.
About HEIC and JPG
image/heic
HEIC is the container format for HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) images. Adopted by Apple in iOS 11 and later, it offers better compression than JPEG with higher quality, supporting features like transparency and image sequences.

Conversion Notes
Image conversion from HEIC to JPG preserves colour information and dimensions. If JPG uses lossy compression (such as JPEG), compression artefacts appear at lower quality settings — use quality 85+ to minimise visible loss. Transparency (alpha channel) is preserved in formats that support it; if the target format does not support transparency, transparent areas are filled with white by default.
Frequently Asked Questions
Apple switched to HEIC as the default in iOS 11 because it's roughly half the file size of JPEG at similar quality. Change it in Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.
